PETS FOR THE ELDERLY The mission of the organization is to provide companionship to senior individuals through pet ownership and care, while saving lives of companion animals in shelters. Thanks to a newly gifted grant from Pets for the Elderly (PFE) NMDR has money to offset adoption costs for seniors ages 60 and up. Please see the chart below for details on adoption fees for each program.
SENIOR AND MILITARY ADOPTION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (SMAAP) SMAAP (Senior and Military Adoption Assistance Program) began in 2022 through a generous donor who wanted to ensure seniors and military personnel were not inhibited by costly adoption fees when looking to add a pet into their family. We know that having a pet in the home provides a wide range of emotional and physical benefits; and are proud now to have this fund to support many more happy companionships through this program. We are very grateful to the individuals and families who serve our country and are honored to support adding a dog to their families. Studies have also shown health, well-being, and increased feelings of companionship are beneficial to seniors having long and happy lives. The Military Assistance Program has special adoption fee discounts. Please see the chart below for details on adoption fees for each program. SENIOR-TO-SENIOR ADOPTION PROGRAM Many studies have shown that having a pet in the home increases health and well-being for all ages, but in particular seniors. The same donor that funds the offset of the military fees has set money aside for this new program! NMDR rescues a fair amount of senior dogs and we love to see them go to homes in the later stages of their lives. We know seniors benefit from having companion animals and are offering a deep discount for adopters ages 67 and over to adopt dogs ages 8 and up.
