How to Adopt

Before You Apply

Every NMDR dog deserves a safe, loving, and lifelong home. The following guidelines help us make the best possible match for both our dogs and adopters.

  • Our dogs are adopted as beloved companions and are not placed primarily for service, working, or guard dog purposes.
  • In most cases, we do not approve adoptions to homes with young children. This policy helps ensure the safety and well-being of both the dog and the family, as many of the dogs we rescue have had little to no experience with children.
  • We strongly encourage all adopters to implement proactive lost dog prevention strategies, including secure leash handling, proper identification (collar tags and microchipping), and careful transition planning during the adjustment period in a new home.
  • Other dogs in the home must be spayed or neutered.
  • If you are ever unable to keep your adopted dog, you must contact NMDR. We may require the dog to be returned to our care.
  • We welcome applications from out-of-state adopters; however, approved adopters must travel to the shelter location where the dog resides to complete the adoption. NOTE: we do not transport dogs between Colorado and Missouri.
  • NMDR does not transport or ship dogs under any circumstances.
  • Adoption fees vary by age and help offset the cost of medical care, rehabilitation, spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, vaccinations, and other services provided before adoption.
  • National Mill Dog Rescue reserves the right to refuse any adoption. All decisions are made with the best interests of our dogs and adopters in mind.

How to Adopt

Thank you for your interest in adopting an NMDR dog! Every adoption creates a new beginning for a dog in need, and we’re honored to be part of that journey.

Complete the application below and select whether you are interested in adopting from our Peyton, Colorado or Humansville, Missouri campus. Dogs are not transported between locations.

To ensure the best match for both dogs and adopters, we follow an application and interview process. All adoptions are currently by appointment only.

Many of the dogs in our care are puppy mill survivors who require patience, understanding, and time to heal. The rewards of helping a dog discover safety, trust, and love are immeasurable.

After submitting your application, an Adoption Coordinator will contact you within 48–72 hours. Please check your spam or junk folder regularly, as our emails are sometimes filtered there.

Your adoption fee helps provide the medical care, rehabilitation, and support our dogs need on their journey to a brighter future.
