DOG FOOD
Canned and dry foods are needed. However, rescued mill dogs have very specific nutritional needs, due to the poor quality food they received in the mills. There are many suitable foods that we prefer to use, available, locally in a number of stores. We use small dog foods, regular adult food, puppy food, and senior food. Also, some of our special needs dogs require grain-free foods. Here are some of the brands we use:
Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Sweet Potato & Fish
We also need Cesar’s, Wellness canned, Purina ProPlan ground for giving meds to our little dogs.

National Mill Dog Rescue was founded in February 2007 because of one extraordinary little dog named Lily.
An Italian Greyhound who had spent the first seven years of her life in a commercial breeding facility, Lily was rescued by NMDR Founder and Executive Director Theresa Strader at a dog auction in Missouri. What Theresa witnessed that day would change the course of her life—and the lives of thousands of dogs to come.
Like so many dogs trapped in large-scale breeding operations, Lily had known little beyond confinement and neglect. She spent years in a small wire cage, producing litter after litter with no opportunity to experience the simple joys every dog deserves: a soft bed, a gentle touch, a walk outdoors, or the comfort of a family.
When Lily was rescued, the physical and emotional toll of those years was impossible to ignore.
Like many dogs in commercial breeding facilities, she had received little to no veterinary care throughout her life. Years of poor nutrition, inadequate dental care, and living conditions that failed to meet even her most basic needs had left devastating damage. The roof of Lily's mouth and part of her lower jaw had literally deteriorated from severe dental disease and neglect. Her chest was riddled with mammary tumors, and she was terrified of human touch.
Yet despite everything she had endured, Lily's spirit remained.
Determined that Lily's suffering would not be forgotten, Theresa brought Lily and twelve other dogs home from the auction and began the challenging work of rehabilitation. What followed was an education in resilience, healing, and the remarkable capacity of dogs to trust again. It also became the foundation of a movement.
From that moment forward, National Mill Dog Rescue was dedicated to giving a voice to dogs like Lily—dogs whose stories are too often hidden from public view.
Since 2007, NMDR has rescued more than 21,000 dogs and built a nationwide community of staff, volunteers, adopters, foster families, supporters, and advocates committed to creating brighter futures for vulnerable dogs. Through rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, education, and advocacy, we work every day to help dogs recover from lives of neglect and discover what it means to be safe, valued, and loved.
Lily spent the rest of her life surrounded by the care she had always deserved. She learned that people could be kind. She experienced comfort, companionship, and the security of a home. Most importantly, she became an ambassador for countless dogs still waiting for their chance.
In time, Lily found the courage to trust. Her small, disfigured body helped educate thousands of people about the realities faced by dogs in commercial breeding facilities and inspired a movement dedicated to changing their future.
When Lily passed away peacefully in May 2008, she was in the arms of the family who loved her, surrounded by those who had given her the life she deserved. Her years of suffering were finally behind her, but her legacy was only beginning.
Today, every dog who walks through our doors carries a piece of Lily's story. Every rescue represents a second chance. Every adoption is proof that healing is possible. And every act of compassion brings us one step closer to a world where dogs are valued not for what they can produce, but for who they are.
