The Early Years

In the beginning…

Did you know National Mill Dog Rescue actually started in Theresa Strader’s backyard? She says it was born seconds after she first saw Lily, a disfigured, fragile Italian Greyhound huddled in her cage at a large-scale dog auction. The moment Lily’s eyes met Theresa’s, she whispered to her, “I am going to take you from this hell and love you ’til you die.” Lily only lived for 15 months, but during that time, she learned what it was to love and trust what she was the most afraid of … people. Lily loved everyone and continues to inspire people around the world.

Lily’s legacy lives on…

Because of one dog, more than 12,500 are free! Hundreds of volunteers came together to work in various capacities to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome retired dogs from the commercial dog breeding industry.

Take a walk down memory lane at the humble beginnings of our organization in this video that shows how far we’ve come in a relatively short period of time,
